What would you do?

A big question that I have wondering is what OS would you teach someone who is new to computers? I initially was thinking that of course, I would show them around Windows. After a little bit more thought I came to the conclusion that I would teach them Linux. For example many people would consider learning a new language a difficult task. Now it is much easier if you are born in that country and learn it as a native language. This is my reason for wanting to teach a n00b Linux. Linux is much more difficult to use than Windows. I believe the transition from Linux to Windows is much easier than from Windows to Linux. Teaching Linux would make them much more technically literate and if they needed to learn Windows they would have an easy transition. These are my thoughts and feel free to comment on them.

This is what I did a couple of years ago when my cousin's family bought their very first PC. I simply installed Mandriva Linux 2006 on it as an experiment to see how new computers would cope with Linux and to save them quite a lot of money. And it turned out that they had no more problems with using the computer then other people for whom I have installed Windows. I think it was even easier for them since they didn't have to bother because of viruses and spyware and other security problems. Now after two years or so they still use Linux as their primary OS for browsing the internet, reading mail, chatting and office work. The only change is that I added a new partition with Windows and they use it for nothing else but games since there is also a child in a family. So I would say just go with Linux. I believe they will not find it any harder to use then Linux. And nowdays Linux distributions are even easier to use than they were a couple of years ago. Well sorry for the long answer and I hope it helps.
